It started at Harbottle Show when Stephen Baxter was asked to judge the new class, Creative Writing. He agreed with great enthusiasm. Stephen is an internationally acclaimed science fiction author who has the good sense to live in Coquetdale.
He suggested one section might be headed ‘A Coquetdale Mosaic’ – his idea being that Valley people should be encouraged to write about their lives in the valley; their love for the valley, describe a favourite place; recount stories, true or apocryphal; pen a word picture of a local character; record memories of elderly family members which all to soon could be lost to future generations.
You may have been involved in the study of the archaeology of the valley (well promoted by the National Parks scheme). So why not describe an archaeological dig; the thrill of finding an artefact. The description may be about here and now but, as an axe-head is part of history to us, so will your piece be history to our grandchildren. Perhaps your house has an interesting history – just put on your thinking caps and log on, put pen to paper, or quill to papyrus if you must.
What’s in it for you – apart from the pleasure of writing ?
1. Your work judged by Stephen Baxter if you enter the Creative Writing Class at Harbottle Show .
2. Your work to be material for an archive of the History of Coquetdale
In this way you can win plaudits in the present day, the privilege of having your work judged by a famous author and, maybe, secure a name for yourself in the history books. History books such as ‘The Clippings’ for a start. An enterprising local publication of a few years ago in which many residents’ names appear and a great variety of topics are covered. A start has already been made, let’s build on it !
