I was born in Liverpool. I have degrees in mathematics and engineering. I worked as a teacher of maths and physics, and in information technology. I am a Chartered Engineer.

I applied to become a cosmonaut in 1991 – aiming for the guest slot on Mir eventually taken by Helen Sharman – but fell at an early hurdle.

My first professionally published short story appeared in 1987. I have been a full-time author since 1995, with over forty science fiction novels published around the world. I am Vice-President of the British Science Fiction Association, a Vice-President of the HG Wells Society and Fellow of the British Interplanetary Society.

My wife Sandra is originally from Pegswood, near Morpeth. We moved to Sharperton in 2004, to be closer to Sandra’s family, and for the quality of life
